Team India's Victory Parade: BMC Workers Surprised By Unusual Items Found In Marine Drive Garbage Clean-Up

The Rohit Sharma-led Team India landed at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday morning after being stranded for days in Barbados due to a hurricane Beryl-induced delay. In the T20 World Cup final, India defeated first-time finalist South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling match in Barbados last week.

Upon landing in the capital on Thursday morning, the Men in Blue assembled at a hotel before heading to a breakfast meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After meeting with PM Modi, the team departed for Mumbai from New Delhi.

In Mumbai, over three lakh cricket fans gathered at Marine Drive and Wankhede Stadium late Thursday night to celebrate the victory of Team India. As the celebrations wound down, the task of restoring the area to its original condition fell upon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to a report shared by the Hindustan Times, BMC workers and volunteers commenced the clean-up operation at 11:30 PM on Thursday, continuing through the night until 8 am on Friday. Their efforts filled two large dumpers and five small jeeps with a significant amount of trash.

Civic officials reported that out of the 8,000 to 9,000 kgs of garbage collected, 3,000 kgs comprised shoes and slippers. The remaining trash included plastic bottles, umbrellas, posters, banners, and food wrappers. The clean-up operation was led by Assistant Commissioner Jaideep More and involved 100 workers from the solid waste management department. They were supported by volunteers from local NGOs such as Ramay Mahila Sangh, Paras Mani Mahila Sevak Sangh, Aadhar Pratishthan, Nirankari Seva Sangh, and Om Shiva Shakti Mandal.

Despite being on the ground by 11 PM, rain, a slow-moving crowd, and traffic delays prevented the workers from beginning their clean-up efforts immediately. "Although we expected this quantum of litter, we were surprised by the shoes and slippers. We had not seen anything like this before," remarked a supervisor. But they will be recycled. The actual clean-up work began at 3 AM and was completed by 8 AM.
