Mumbai, Nov 20: On the occasion of birth anniversary of late party supremo Bal Thackeray on January 23, Shiv Sena demanded that the Eastern Freeway in Mumbai be named after him.

Sena leaders have written a letter to Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the same.

The Sena leaders appreciated the CM's personal visit to pay tribute to Bal Thackeray on his second death anniversary and put forward the demand before him.

"We have submitted a memorandum of our demand to the chief minister. We want that the Eastern Freeway be named after Balasaheb Thackeray on his birth anniversary on January 23. Also, the Thane-Nashik-Adgaon Expressway should be named after Thackeray," Raote said.

"We welcome your announcement to build a memorial for Balasaheb and forming a committee under the chief secretary for the same, " Raote said in the letter to Fadnavis.

The other demands include naming a flyover in Nashik after late poet V.V. Shirwadkar and another flyover in Mumbai, from Phoenix Tower to Kamala Mills, to be named after late Sena leader Dattaji Nalawade.

NCP leader Nawab Malik was the first to demand that the Eastern Freeway be named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, considering that the area has a sizable population of the backward classes.
