Authorities in Panvel, Thane, Bhiwandi, and Navi Mumbai have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on August 20, 2025, following an India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast of intense rainfall across Raigad district and adjoining regions.

The decision affects schools, colleges, vocational training centres, and ashram schools across these areas. Officials confirmed that the order was issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, prioritising the safety of students, teachers, and staff amid adverse weather conditions.

Official Notification from Panvel Municipal Corporation

The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) issued a formal notification confirming that the closure applies to both government and private schools, aided and unaided institutions, junior colleges, and vocational training institutes. Civic officials emphasised that the measure is precautionary, aimed at protecting children from possible flooding and transport disruptions during heavy rainfall.

Similar Orders in Thane, Bhiwandi, and Navi Mumbai

Alongside Panvel, the municipal corporations of Thane, Bhiwandi, and Navi Mumbai released similar orders, declaring that all educational institutions in their jurisdictions will remain closed on August 20. Schools and colleges have been instructed to strictly comply with the directive.

BMC Clarifies: No Holiday in Mumbai

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that no holiday has been announced for schools in Mumbai on August 20. The civic body dismissed a viral social media message suggesting otherwise, calling it fake news. The clarification was posted on BMC's official social media handles to prevent misinformation.

On Tuesday, however, the BMC had already declared a holiday for schools in Mumbai due to a red alert issued by IMD. Institutions in Dadar, Sion, Mahim, and Matunga had also sent students home early on Monday due to waterlogging.

In the BMC region, extremely heavy rainfall has been recorded over the past two days. Since midnight on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the city has continued to witness uninterrupted showers. Despite the ongoing downpour, routine life in Mumbai remains largely unaffected, with services of Central Railway, Western Railway, Harbour Railway, and BEST buses operating smoothly.

School Closures Due to Flooding Concerns

Heavy rains have battered several parts of Maharashtra this week, leading to flooding and traffic congestion. The Thane Municipal Corporation also issued a notice confirming that all types of schools, including pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions, whether government-aided or unaided, would remain closed.

Additionally, Maharashtra's Std XI admission process under the Special Round has been extended until August 22 due to the ongoing weather conditions. Some degree colleges in Mumbai are reportedly considering shifting to online classes to avoid disruption during this period.

Adjustments in Academic Schedule

The civic bodies have further confirmed that any scheduled examinations or training programs on August 20 will be rescheduled at the school level. These changes come after Monday's heavy showers, when multiple schools in Mumbai were forced to release students early due to rising water levels.
