In a recent OneIndia interview, Dr. Sudhir Krishna, former Secretary of Urban Development and Chairman of the Committee on Standard Smart Cities, shared his insights on the highly-anticipated Dharavi Redevelopment Project.

This ambitious initiative, championed by the Fadnavis-Shinde government, promises to transform Asia's largest slum into a modern urban settlement. Dr. Krishna praised the political commitment and technical approach that underline the project's potential to be a game-changer for Mumbai and India.

A Historic Opportunity

Dr. Krishna emphasised that the redevelopment of Dharavi is a monumental step, not just for Mumbai or Maharashtra, but for the entire country. He highlighted the persistent challenge of informal settlements across Indian cities, which have remained largely unresolved for decades. "Despite multiple slum redevelopment programmes, the problem of slums has only proliferated," he noted, adding that Dharavi's transformation offers hope for addressing such issues on a broader scale.

The Dharavi project, meticulously planned, includes provisions for housing, education, healthcare, parks and playgrounds. It represents a holistic vision that aims to uplift the quality of life for nearly a million residents. The formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and the partnership with the Adani Group mark a strategic shift in the approach to Dharavi's redevelopment. The involvement of renowned architect Hafeez Contractor and global design firm Sasaki ensures that the project is both visionary and grounded in practical solutions.

Dr. Krishna underscored the importance of political will in driving such transformative initiatives. He praised the Fadnavis-Shinde government for prioritising the Dharavi project and ensuring its continuity despite nearly two decades of delays.
