Reay Road Bridge Unveiled: Mumbai’s First Cable-Stayed Marvel Set To Open In November – Find Out What’s Inside

Mumbai's eagerly awaited Reay Road bridge is set to open in November, marking the city's first cable-stayed bridge since the renowned Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This important infrastructure project for South Mumbai is a collaborative effort between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC).

Reason For Reconstruction

The original Reay Road bridge, constructed in 1911 with black basalt stones, was a crucial traffic artery in downtown Mumbai. Over the years, the bridge suffered significant wear and tear due to increased vehicular load. Its deteriorating condition led to its demolition in 2022, making way for a modern replacement designed to handle current traffic demands, according to an Indian Express report.

Reay Road Bridge Features

The new Reay Road bridge is set to be a state-of-the-art cable-stayed structure with four vehicular lanes. Spanning 220 metres, it will also feature a dedicated footpath for pedestrians. The design is inspired by the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, merging functionality with visual appeal. Additionally, selfie points at both ends of the bridge are being developed to enhance its aesthetic charm.

Reay Road Bridge Location

Situated near the Reay Road station, the bridge will pass above the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) without interrupting highway traffic. Given Reay Road's significance as a major traffic hub in South Mumbai, the new bridge will improve connectivity to key areas such as Byculla, Colaba, and Churchgate, reducing congestion and facilitating smoother travel for commuters.

Reay Road Bridge Project Cost

The construction of the Reay Road bridge is budgeted at Rs 175 crore. With 90 per cent of the work already completed, the bridge is on schedule to open for vehicular traffic in November. Once operational, it is expected to significantly alleviate traffic issues in the area.

Official Statement

"The Reay Road bridge will be the first cable-stayed bridge in Mumbai constructed entirely on land. It will be a landmark project, enhancing connectivity in South Mumbai while contributing to the city's visual appeal," said Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, of Projects.
