Rajendra Raut: A Resilient Political Force In Barshi's Shiv Sena Landscape

Rajendra Raut, a prominent figure in Barshi, has gained significant influence in the ongoing Shiv Sena battle against the Thackeray faction. His journey began in the 1990s when many young individuals, inspired by Balasaheb Thackeray's vision, joined Shiv Sena. Raut, hailing from Barshi on the Solapur-Dharashiv border, was one such individual who embraced this movement.

Raut's political career took off as he actively engaged in Barshi's politics. He served as a corporator in 1996 and later became mayor in 1998. This period marked the beginning of his rivalry with Dilip Sopal. In 1995, Sopal won from Barshi Assembly Constituency and supported an alliance. However, when Sharad Pawar established NCP in 1999, Sopal switched allegiance.

Political Journey and Challenges

Shiv Sena nominated Raut against Sopal in 1999, but he faced defeat initially. Undeterred, Raut continued his political fight with renewed determination. In 2004, Shiv Sena once again trusted him with a ticket for the Legislative Assembly elections. This time, Raut achieved success by defeating Sopal and securing his place in the assembly.

The year 2005 saw Narayan Rane's revolt within Shiv Sena, causing a significant upheaval as 11 MLAs left alongside him. Rane secured a ministerial position, leading to by-elections for those constituencies. During this tumultuous period, Raut supported Rane but faced defeat in 2009. Despite setbacks, he remained resilient.

Independent Stance and Political Resilience

In 2014, Rajendra Raut returned to Shiv Sena and contested elections again but was unsuccessful. He then ran as an independent candidate in 2019 amidst strong competition in rural areas like Barshi. Despite challenges and high-profile visits from Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray to the constituency, Raut emerged victorious over Sopal.

The political landscape shifted after Devendra Fadnavis' leadership post-2019 elections. Although Maharashtra voters backed the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, Uddhav Thackeray allied with Congress and NCP instead. While many independents joined Mahavikas Aghadi, Raut chose to support Fadnavis from opposition benches.

Development Initiatives and Public Support

Despite facing hardships during his leadership tenure, Rajendra Raut remained steadfast in his opposition role. His loyalty to Fadnavis earned him recognition across Maharashtra as a dedicated MLA. The power dynamics changed again in 2022 when Shinde-Fadnavis' alliance came into power.

This shift brought positive changes for Raut as he secured substantial development funds for his constituency over two years. Known for his outspoken nature and commitment to public welfare regardless of being in power or not, he aggressively advocates for people's issues.

Current Political Scenario

Raut is renowned for confronting Manoj Jarange on Maratha reservation matters by threatening an indefinite hunger strike if necessary. He maintains control over most market committees and local bodies within his constituency due to strong public support.

Popularly referred to as Raja Raut among state political circles due to his direct approach towards representing constituents' interests effectively; he gained popularity through speeches supporting grand alliance candidates during Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance lost Barshi assembly constituency under Fadnavis' leadership; however Devendra Fadnavis' trusted MLA joined forces with Eknath Shinde who offered him another chance from Barshi assembly constituency against Dilip Sopal of Ubhata group.

Experts predict that considering constituency dynamics favoring Rajendra Raut will make this electoral battle relatively easier for him compared to previous contests faced throughout his career thus far.
