Pune Metro Phase 2 Work Begins; Double-Decker Lines Planned to Loni Kalbhor, Saswad

Pune Metro has begun formal work on its second phase, planning elevated corridors from Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road Railway Station. The project, handled by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, is estimated at Rs 5,794 crore and aims to ease traffic on the busy Pune-Solapur corridor while expanding suburban connectivity.

The new stretches, labelled Line 4B and Line 4C, will run on double-decker structures with road traffic below and metro tracks above. Planners say these links will connect fast-growing areas such as Hadapsar, Phursungi, Loni Kalbhor and Saswad, cut travel time, and reduce dependence on private vehicles for daily commuting within Pune city.

Pune Metro phase two routes and station details

Line 4B is planned as an 11.102 km elevated corridor with ten stations and two levels. The first tier will function as a flyover for vehicles, while the second tier will carry the metro. Stations are proposed at Hadapsar Phata, Hadapsar Bus Depot, Akashwani-Hadapsar, Laxmi Colony, Stad Farm, Manjari Phata, Draksha Baug, Toll Naka, Wak Vasti and Loni Kalbhor.

Line 4C will span 5.573 km and also use a double-decker layout, with road traffic on the lower level and metro alignment above. Four stations are planned along this route. They are located at Hadapsar Gliding Club, Fursungi IT Park, Sulabh Garden and Saswad Road Railway Station, serving key residential and employment hubs on the city’s eastern side.

Pune Metro phase two planning, design and approvals

The Pune Municipal Corporation received the detailed project report for these stretches in 2023 and cleared it in February 2024. The file then moved to the Maharashtra Government and now awaits clearance from the Union Government. The two links form part of the wider Khadakwasla to Kharadi corridor, planned under Pune Metro’s second phase.

Administrative work for Pune Metro’s second phase entered a new stage when the Maharashtra Government’s infrastructure committee, in November 2025, permitted development of elevated metro segments from Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor and from Hadapsar to Saswad Road Railway Station. These permissions covered both the rail infrastructure and the associated double-decker flyovers on the Pune-Solapur highway.

Pune Metro is currently seeking technical experts to finalise the structure and station layouts for the new lines. "Pune Metro has sought a proposal for a detailed design consultancy for the 10 elevated stations of Line 4B, from Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor, and Line 4C, from Hadapsar to Saswad," said Chandrashekhar Tambekar, a spokesperson for the metro.

Pune Metro phase two infrastructure and traffic impact

Project plans say each station on these Pune Metro routes will include space for future links to other transport modes, along with parking areas and footbridges. Designs also mention systems to limit noise and air pollution, as authorities try to match metro expansion with basic environmental safeguards in rapidly urbanising belts around Pune.

The decision to combine flyovers and metro tracks on the same corridor follows long-standing demand from state leaders. "The metro routes will ease road traffic on the Pune-Solapur road and discourage people from using private vehicles to commute in Pune city. It will ensure safe and faster commuting," the late deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said last year as he had pushed for a double-decker flyover along with the metro route.

The double-decker structure also needed review from multiple agencies before the route was frozen. As the road section falls under a national highway, views were taken from the National Highway Authority of India. Inputs were also sought from the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, given their roles in regional transport planning.

Pune Metro phase two in context of existing network

Pune Metro’s first phase, covering the Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate lines, is already in service. Work is in progress to extend the PCMC corridor up to Akurdi and continue the Swargate line southwards to Katraj. The Union Government has also sanctioned extensions from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and from Ramwadi to Vithalwadi.

The second phase of Pune Metro includes two additional corridors beyond the Hadapsar stretches. One line will link Khadakwasla to Kharadi and is expected to intersect at Hadapsar. Another will run between Nal Stop and Manikbaug. These projects have received central approval, placing them in the pipeline along with the Hadapsar-focused extensions.

Construction work linked with phase two is already visible on another section of Pune Metro. Last week, agencies began building an extension from Ramwadi that includes a 4.7 km flyover at the first level and an elevated metro viaduct above. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited remains the central implementing agency across all Pune Metro corridors.
