When PM Narendra Modi visited BARC (In pics)

Mumbai, July 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) here, the first time after assuming the top office in May. He spoke to Dr RK Sinha, secretary of the DAE and other top officials at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) on India's atomic energy programme, DAE's extensive research and development and education programmes and DAE's contribution in fields like healthcare, especially cancer treatment, food security, solid waste management and water purification.

Besides top officials of BARC and AERC (Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission) National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Joint Secretary in the PMO, Javed Ashraf, and Private Secretaries to the PM, Shri Vikram Misri and Shri Sanjiv Singla were also present on the occasion.

PM Modi asked the DAE officials to draw up a programme for year-long celebrations keeping in mind the Diamond Jubilee of the DAE, which is on August 3. Modi urged the DAE to particularly focus on various human and development dimensions of atomic science with outreach to the youth.

During his four-hour visit, the prime minister was briefed about the DAE's safety and security practices and he was also shown the DAE's advanced facilities at the BARC, including the Dhruva Research Reactor.

Modi appreciated India's extraordinary achievements in the realm of science and technology.
