Prakash Abitkar: A Catalyst for Change in Maharashtra's Political Landscape

In the backdrop of Mumbai, Thane, Konkan, and Marathwada, the Shiv Sena has achieved notable successes. However, establishing a foothold in the Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara regions has demanded significant efforts from the party. The intricate web of cooperatives and the dominance of Congress leaders in these areas meant that the economic lifelines remained firmly in Congress's hands, delaying the Shiv Sena's ideological spread and organizational growth. The party managed to expand its base in Western Maharashtra primarily by rallying disgruntled factions from Congress. Nonetheless, the political landscape remains largely under the influence of the Congress and NCP.

Prakash Abitkar A Catalyst for Change in Maharashtra s Political Landscape

Historically, the Radhanagari, Bhudargad, and Ajra constituencies have seen Congress's supremacy. This constituency has alternated support among the Farmer-Labour Party, Congress, and NCP. Despite persistent efforts, the Shiv Sena has struggled to garner more than 10,000 to 12,000 votes for its candidates. However, under the leadership of Prakash Abitkar, the party proudly hoisted its saffron flag for the first time in this constituency.

Abitkar secured consecutive victories in 2014 and 2019, solidifying his grip on the constituency. He unseated the NCP's K.P. Patil, who had been elected twice from this region. In his inaugural Assembly election in 2009, Abitkar garnered 36,000 votes. Yet, it was through his organizational acumen that he clinched victory in 2014, a feat he replicated in 2019.

Uddhav Thackeray's Oversight of Legislators' Concerns

Following the 2019 elections, Uddhav Thackeray severed ties with the BJP and allied with the Congress and NCP, leading the Mahavikas Aghadi. In this coalition government, Thackeray served as Chief Minister, while his son, Aaditya Thackeray, held the cabinet ministerial role. This decision, however, did not sit well with many Shiv Sena legislators.

Thane MLA Pratap Sarnaik penned a letter urging Thackeray to dissolve the Mahavikas Aghadi and reestablish ties with the BJP. Ignoring the pleas from within his party, Thackeray chose to maintain his position as Chief Minister. Subsequently, dramatic events unfolded as Eknath Shinde and his faction revolted, gaining support from a significant number of Shiv Sena MLAs, ministers, district council members, and municipal corporators. Legal proceedings favored Shinde, leading to a shift of the party and its symbol to him. Among the legislators backing Shinde was Radhanagari MLA Prakash Abitkar.

The Kolhapur District Bank is a crucial establishment in Maharashtra's cooperative sector, where Prakash Abitkar has been elected as a director. Additionally, he has served on the board of renowned dairy cooperative Gokul, giving him a deep understanding of the cooperative landscape. Leveraging his political experience in Kolhapur, Abitkar aims to benefit his Radhanagari constituency through state government initiatives.

Establishment of Agricultural and Engineering College

Thanks to Abitkar's efforts, the Shri Anand Rao Abitkar Agricultural and Engineering College has been established in Gargoti, providing local youth with educational opportunities close to home. Abitkar also played a significant role in securing ₹1.5 crore for a new school building for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Adarsh Prashala in the Khanapur Gram Panchayat area of his constituency. Additionally, an Ambedkar Bhavan was constructed in Gargoti due to his advocacy.

Development of Sub-District Hospital

Radhanagari, Ajra, and Bhudargad are predominantly rural constituencies, where the cooperative sector has a strong presence. However, medical facilities are limited. Aware of this, Abitkar facilitated the construction of a sub-district hospital in Kasba Tarale, with the state government approving a budget of ₹23 crore for the facility.

As an agriculture-centric constituency, Radhanagari prioritizes issues related to irrigation and cooperatives. Abitkar has initiated efforts to construct a 17-kilometer-long canal for the Mudalte Minche project, estimated at ₹24 crore, which will benefit over 3,000 farmers in the area. Farmers in the vicinity of the Dhamani Dam in Radhanagari stand to gain significantly. Furthermore, under Abitkar's leadership, the Megholi Bandhara in the Bhudargad block was built, costing ₹44 crore and benefitting over 20,000 residents. The completion of the Sonwade Shivdaw Ghat road, costing ₹12 crore, will improve accessibility for over 4,000 local residents.

With Prakash Abitkar at the helm, the Shiv Sena has built a robust presence in the Radhanagari-Ajra-Bhudargad constituency. Both Congress and NCP are grappling with internal factionalism. Abitkar has capitalized on the dissatisfaction among opposition ranks, a trend likely to repeat in the upcoming elections. Political analysts in Kolhapur predict that Abitkar is poised for a significant victory, potentially marking his third consecutive term in the Assembly.
