Nitin Gadkari Announces Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru Expressway Project

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced a new high-speed express highway project. This ambitious venture aims to significantly cut travel times between Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru. The highway is expected to reduce the Mumbai-Pune journey to just 90 minutes and make it possible to reach Bengaluru from Pune in five hours.

Massive Investments in Infrastructure

In Pune district alone, road and highway projects worth ₹50,000 crore are underway. Across the broader region, infrastructure developments totalling ₹2 lakh crore are in progress. Additionally, new projects valued at ₹15,000 crore are set to commence soon, with proposals for another ₹15,000 crore currently under consideration.

Urban Connectivity and Airport Upgrades

Plans are being made to construct elevated road corridors within Pune city to alleviate traffic congestion. The expansion of Pune airport is also on the agenda. Although land acquisition poses challenges, Gadkari emphasised that strong political will and effective coordination can overcome these hurdles.

The new route will begin at the Atal Tunnel in Mumbai, connect with the Pune Ring Road, and extend further to Bengaluru. According to Times Property, this project is already under construction. Notably, work commenced without a formal launch event because construction had already started.

Reflecting on past projects, Gadkari recalled the earlier Mumbai-Pune Expressway development. A private company had initially quoted ₹3,600 crore for its completion. However, the state government managed to finish it for just ₹1,600 crore.

The minister's announcement highlights significant investments in infrastructure across the region. These efforts aim to improve connectivity and facilitate economic growth by enhancing transportation networks and urban infrastructure.

While land acquisition remains a challenge for these projects, Gadkari stressed that political determination and efficient coordination could resolve such issues effectively. This approach is crucial for ensuring timely completion of infrastructure developments that promise to transform regional connectivity.
