New Mumbai To Goa Train Launched: Enjoy Faster Travel With Western Railway's Latest Express; Details Inside

Residents of Mumbai's western suburbs now have a new, more convenient way to travel to Goa. On Thursday, a new train service operated by Western Railway (WR) was inaugurated, offering a direct route from Mumbai to Goa via the picturesque Konkan region.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal officially flagged off the Bandra Terminus-Madgaon Express from Borivali station. While the inaugural service commenced from Borivali, regular operations are set to begin on September 4. The train will then run from Bandra Terminus every Wednesday and Friday, with return services from Madgaon to Bandra Terminus scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday.

Mumbai To Goa Train Route

Historically, trains from Mumbai to Goa have been managed by Central Railway (CR). The new WR service presents a unique challenge: the train will travel north from Borivali to Vasai, where it will need to reverse direction towards Panvel. This requires the locomotive to be moved from one end of the train to the other, resulting in a 25-minute halt at Vasai.

The total journey from Mumbai to Goa is expected to take between 14 and 16 hours, including this halt. In comparison, CR trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Vasai to Madgaon typically take between 10 and 12 hours. The additional time for the WR service is due to the need for engine reversal at Vasai.

Mumbai To Goa Train Improvements

To address this issue, there is a proposal to expedite the construction of a chord line connecting WR and CR. This new line, proposed in 2018, would link the Vasai-Diva-Panvel corridor to the Konkan railway, eliminating the need for the engine reversal at Vasai.

According to a senior WR official, the Railway Board has approved the project, but land acquisition is still pending. The planned 5.73-kilometre double-line rail flyover connector between WR's Naigaon station and Juchandra station on the Vasai-Diva line is expected to be a significant boost for commuters and outstation traffic.

The project, known as the Vasai Bypass, has been allocated Rs 50 lakh in this year's Union Budget. Total construction costs are estimated at Rs 176 crore, with work expected to take around two years.
