Navi Mumbai Airport Inaugurated by PM Modi: Key Features, Cost and Flights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, October 8, marking Mumbai as one of the few global cities with multiple airports, alongside London, New York, and Tokyo. The state-of-the-art airport is expected to start commercial operations in December.

The airport has been developed through a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd).

India's First Fully Digital Airport:
NMIA will feature pre-booking of vehicle parking slots, online baggage drop, and digital immigration services. The airport will operate with a fully automated, AI-enabled terminal, making travel faster and more convenient.

Passenger Capacity:
The 1,160-hectare airport will initially handle 20 million passengers annually with one runway and terminal. At full capacity, it can accommodate 155 million passengers across four terminals and two runways.

Investment and Employment:
Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is projected to generate over 2 lakh jobs across aviation, logistics, IT, hospitality, and real estate sectors.

Airline Operations:
Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, plan to operate flights connecting NMIA to major cities across India.

Commercial Operations and Traffic:
Commercial operations will begin in December, with 40% international traffic initially, increasing to 75%. The airport will operate for 12 hours daily in the initial phase.

AI-Enabled Facilities:
According to Arun Bansal, CEO of AAHL, NMIA is designed to be an "anxiety-free airport" with advanced automation. For instance, passengers will receive real-time updates on their baggage, including carousel numbers, directly on their phones.

Connectivity:
NMIA will be India's first major aviation hub linked to expressways, metro and suburban rail networks, and waterway services, ensuring seamless connectivity for travelers.
