Nariman Point to Virar in Just 40 Minutes? Mumbai's Coastal Road Expansion Promises Faster Commutes
In a significant announcement that promises to change the face of commuting in Mumbai, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis disclosed plans for an ambitious extension of the Coastal Road. This new stretch will connect Nariman Point, located at the southern tip of Mumbai, to Virar in Palghar district. Once completed, this extension is expected to drastically reduce travel times between these two points to a mere 45 minutes.
The Deputy Chief Minister outlined that this monumental project would receive substantial backing from the Japanese government, with an investment of Rs 54,000 crore earmarked for its completion. This financial injection from Japan is set to cover the cost of extending the Coastal Road, ensuring that the project has the resources needed to proceed without financial hitches.

Enhancing Mumbai's Connectivity
Currently under construction, the Coastal Road project is being developed as an 8-lane, 29.2 km expressway. It's designed to run along the western coastline of Mumbai, linking Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. This ambitious initiative aims to provide a seamless travel experience across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), significantly easing traffic congestion.
Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the strategic importance of the Coastal Road extension for improving connectivity within the MMR. By facilitating smoother travel across the region, this project is expected to alleviate the daily struggles faced by millions of commuters. Furthermore, it is set to play a crucial role in bolstering regional infrastructure and propelling economic growth across the area.
The ongoing Coastal Road initiative includes a crucial phase that was inaugurated on March 11, 2024. This phase, covering a 10.58 km stretch from the Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link, marks a significant milestone in the project's progression.
Next Phases of Construction
Fadnavis also revealed that the tender for the Versova to Madh segment of the Coastal Road has been floated, with plans to kickstart the construction of the Madh to Uttan link shortly. These steps are integral to realizing the project's vision of enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times within the region.
The extension of the Coastal Road from Nariman Point to Virar is not just a boon for commuters seeking quicker travel options but also a testament to the strategic partnerships fostering infrastructure development in Maharashtra. With the Japanese government's financial support, this project stands as a symbol of international cooperation aimed at improving the lives of Mumbaikars.
