Mumbai's Coastal Road Project Status Update: Heavy Rains Push Completion Date Back; Check New Deadlines Inside

The Coastal Road project in Mumbai has faced additional delays due to heavy rains and adverse weather conditions, according to Times Now. This setback has pushed back the anticipated completion date for the 10.58 km-long high-speed corridor, which stretches from Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Currently, the road is operational only up to Worli and is accessible on weekdays between 7 am and 11 pm.

Although construction of the pillars in the Arabian Sea has been completed, high tidal waves have hindered the installation of three crucial girders for the northbound arm. While progress continues on the southbound arm, important tasks such as laying bitumen and waterproofing are still pending.

Coastal Road Project Status Update

Civic officials have indicated that a period of 15 days of clear weather is needed to complete the remaining work. Given the current adverse weather conditions, it is now projected that the entire coastal road may not be fully operational until the end of December.

The southbound arm is expected to be completed by October, with the northbound arm anticipated to be ready by the end of November. Additional work, including traffic signage and lighting, could further extend this timeline, as reported by the Indian Express.

Officials are contemplating allowing both northbound and southbound traffic on the coastal road from the sea link once the first bow-string bridge is completed in October. However, this plan may result in traffic congestion at the sea link exit, so a final decision on this matter is still pending.

Coastal Road Project Status Update

Last month, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the northbound stretch of the coastal road, with the expectation that it would be partially linked with the Sea Link by the end of July.

The Coastal Road project, named the Dharamveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Mumbai Coastal Road, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 13,000 crore. It includes a series of traffic interchanges, undersea tunnels, and bridges built on reclaimed land. This project is the first phase of a larger plan to provide direct connectivity from Marine Drive to Dahisar.
