Mumbai Western Express Highway News: Better Roads, Signals, And More Expected

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to improve the Western Express Highway (WEH), a vital 26-kilometre stretch connecting Bandra East to Dahisar, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. The highway, used daily by over 2.2 million motorists, is set to benefit from a comprehensive policy aimed at easing congestion and enhancing road quality.

In a meeting held on Thursday, civic chief and administrator Bhushan Gagrani unveiled the proposal, urging collaboration between the BMC, traffic police, and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The plan includes removing bottlenecks, improving road conditions, and introducing uniform standards for footpaths, medians, signage, and railings.

Key Initiatives For Smoother Traffic Flow

As a first step, the deputy municipal commissioner for infrastructure, Ulhas Mahale, has been tasked with drafting a standard operating procedure (SOP) for resolving bottlenecks. Additionally, the joint commissioner of police for traffic, Anil Kumbhare, will provide detailed recommendations.

While the highway is free of potholes, Gagrani noted that mastic technology has created humps in some areas, which will be minimised. Immediate improvements to rainwater drainage are also planned to prevent flooding during the monsoon.

Other measures include:

Adding traffic signals and widening narrow roads.
Removing abandoned vehicles and improving the sturdiness of drainage covers.
Ensuring all streetlights, including those on flyovers and underpasses, are operational.

Collaboration With IIT-Bombay

The BMC is working with IIT-Bombay to enhance road-concretisation efforts, and the institute's expertise may be used for additional improvements. The plan also includes beautifying the highway with greenery along dividers, attractive colour schemes for dividers, and regular cleaning of footpaths and road edges.

Expected Outcomes

If implemented successfully, the upgrades could significantly reduce congestion and make commuting smoother for millions of motorists. With agencies working together and expert input from IIT-Bombay, the Western Express Highway could soon become a model of efficiency and modern infrastructure.

Immediate Actions

Deputy municipal commissioner Ulhas Mahale and joint commissioner of police Anil Kumbhare to finalise suggestions.
Prompt clearance of no-objection certificates for road development.
Enhanced pedestrian safety with zebra crossings where required.

The BMC's commitment to addressing these issues reflects a proactive approach to urban planning, promising much-needed relief for motorists and pedestrians alike.
