Mumbai Water Cut From May 15: Low Water Levels In All 7 Mumbai Lakes Trigger 10% Water Supply Reduction

Mumbai residents will face a 10 per cent water cut from May 15 after water levels across all seven lakes supplying the city dropped significantly ahead of the monsoon season.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the decision as a precautionary measure to conserve available water reserves until sufficient rainfall replenishes the reservoirs. The restriction will apply not only across Mumbai but also in areas under Thane Municipal Corporation, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation and nearby villages connected to the same water supply network.

Mumbai will implement a 10% water cut starting May 15 due to critically low levels in the seven supplying lakes, holding only 23.52% of the annual requirement. This BMC decision aims to conserve reserves and impacts Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, and nearby villages, with additional draws from dam reserves.

According to the civic body, lake levels are currently "quite low", prompting authorities to urge citizens to avoid wastage and use water only for essential purposes.

Water Levels Fall Across Mumbai's 7 Lakes

Mumbai receives its water supply from seven major lakes - Tulsi, Vihar, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa.

BMC said the combined usable water stock in these reservoirs stood at 340,399 Million Liters as of Monday, which is only 23.52 per cent of Mumbai's annual water requirement of 1,447,363 Million Liters.

Mumbai Water Storage Details

According to BMC, the combined usable water available across Mumbai's seven lakes currently stands at 340,399 Million Liters, while the city's annual water requirement is estimated at 1,447,363 Million Liters. To support supply during the pre-monsoon period, Mumbai will also receive 147,092 Million Liters from the maintenance reserve of Bhatsa Dam and another 90,000 Million Liters from the maintenance reserve of Upper Vaitarna Dam.

Officials said water levels are being monitored closely every day while supply distribution is being managed carefully to avoid further stress on the system before the arrival of monsoon rains.

BMC Cites Weak Monsoon Concerns

The civic administration said the decision follows directives issued by the Water Resources Department of the Maharashtra government and weather forecasts linked to possible El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions.

According to BMC, the India Meteorological Department's projections regarding the possibility of a weaker monsoon also influenced the decision to implement the cut early.

Despite concerns around falling storage levels, civic officials maintained that there is "no reason to panic" and described the move as a temporary precautionary step.

To manage the situation, Mumbai will receive additional water allocations from key dam reserves.

BMC said 147,092 Million Liters will be supplied from the maintenance reserve of Bhatsa Dam, while another 90,000 Million Liters will come from Upper Vaitarna Dam reserves.

Officials believe the additional allocation, combined with the 10 per cent reduction in supply, should help the city manage water demand until effective rainfall begins.

The latest restriction comes shortly after BMC carried out a planned 30-hour water shutdown in several parts of Mumbai earlier this month for tunnel-linking and maintenance work under its Water Supply Project.

While authorities continue to assure residents that the situation remains under control, citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary water usage and conserve water wherever possible until reservoir levels improve after the monsoon arrives.
