Mumbai Water Cut: BMC Announces 15% Supply Reduction After Transformer Failure

A transformer malfunction at the Pise Power Substation has led to a significant disruption in the water supply system affecting Mumbai, Thane, and Bhiwandi, according to a Midday report. This unfortunate event took place at 1:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, specifically targeting the B-phase current transformer of the main transformer, labelled No. 1.

Due to this failure, a critical part of the infrastructure that powers six out of twenty booster pumps ceased operations. These pumps are essential for channelling water to these densely populated areas.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) promptly responded to the crisis, announcing a 15 per cent reduction in water availability for the entire weekend on December 14 and 15. Residents of Mumbai and its suburbs, along with those living in Thane and Bhiwandi, are directly impacted by this shortage. The BMC has embarked on urgent repair work to fix the transformer and get the booster pumps back online.

An official from the BMC elaborated in the Midday report that the transformer's breakdown occurred unexpectedly at midnight on Friday, leading to an immediate halt in the operation of several booster pumps. The BMC has made it a priority to undertake repairs swiftly to mitigate the effects of this disruption on the water supply. Residents have been urged to conserve water during this period to lessen the severity of the supply cut.

The BMC has committed to working tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure the repairs are completed and normal water supply is restored as promptly as possible. "We are doing everything possible to resolve the issue and resume normal water supply as soon as possible," stated a BMC spokesperson in the same report. The corporation's request to the public is to practice prudent water use while the repair efforts are ongoing to help ease the strain on the limited water supply available during this time.
