Mumbai's Transport Overhaul: New Metro Lines And Mumbai One App Set For 2025 Launch

Mumbai is on the brink of a major transport overhaul. By late 2025, four new Metro lines are set to partially open, offering lakhs of commuters quicker and more efficient travel options. Alongside this expansion, the city will introduce the Mumbai One app, a digital platform unifying various public transport modes.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is actively constructing a 12-line Metro network that spans 337.1 km across the region. Currently, four lines covering 58.9 km are operational, while eight more lines extending over 165.7 km are under construction.

Metro Expansion Progress

Metro Line 9, known as the Red Line, will run from Dahisar to Mira Bhayander. The stretch from Dahisar to Kashigaon is expected to open by December 2025, with 98% of work completed. This elevated line will connect with existing Lines 2A and 10, enhancing east-west connectivity in suburban areas.

The Yellow Line or Metro Line 2B will link DN Nagar to Mandale via BKC and Kurla. The section from Mandale to Diamond Garden is slated for completion by the end of 2025, with trial runs already underway and 78% of work finished. This line serves as a crucial connector between western suburbs and eastern zones like Chembur.

Upcoming Metro Lines

Metro Line 3, also called the Aqua Line, stretches underground from Colaba to SEEPZ. The segment from Cuffe Parade to Aarey is set to open in August 2025, with civil work nearly complete at 99.86%. Part of this line was opened in May 2025.

Lines 4 and 4A form the Green Line running from Wadala to Kasarvadavli and Gaimukh. The section from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction is anticipated for early 2026 opening, with over 84% of work done. This line aims to enhance north-south mobility along Mumbai's central belt.

Mumbai One App: A Unified Travel Solution

The Mumbai One app promises to transform commuting for Mumbaikars by integrating eleven transport services such as suburban railways (Central, Western, Harbour lines), Metro lines, Monorail, and buses operated by BEST, TMT, KDMT, MBMT, and NMMT.

Key features include map-based journey planning, a single QR code for multimodal travel, live service updates, SOS safety features, and seamless payment integration. Supporting the Digital India mission, it aims for paperless and cashless commuting across one of India's most intricate urban networks.

Training Hub for Metro Staff

To support this expanding network, MMRDA has opened the Mandale Metro Depot housing India's largest Metro training centre equipped with advanced simulators for training new recruits and upskilling current staff. This initiative aligns with the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) contributing to urban skill development.

With infrastructure nearing completion and smart mobility tools in place alongside ongoing training efforts, Mumbai is steadily advancing towards an integrated public transport system. If timelines hold true by late 2025 commuters can look forward to a significantly improved experience.
