Mumbai Traffic Update: BMC Issues Travel Advisory For Muharram Processions Near Sion Flyover

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a precautionary advisory to residents ahead of Muharram processions scheduled for July 17 and 18, urging them to avoid travelling on the Sion flyover, also known as Shiv flyover.

This decision follows safety concerns raised by the Central Railway Authority regarding the structural integrity of the flyover, prompting BMC's 'G North' department to prioritize public safety during the upcoming religious observance.

About Muharram

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds deep significance for the Muslim community worldwide. It is marked by processions that commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. In Mumbai, these processions, including the traditional "Shab A Shahdat" procession, are anticipated to draw large numbers of participants from areas such as Bandra, Kurla, and Dharavi, converging at Mahim Reti Bandar for the Tajia immersion ritual.

Alternative Routes

"In light of the expected congregations and the safety assessment of the Sion flyover, we advise residents to plan their travel routes accordingly," stated a BMC spokesperson. Alternative routes via the 'T Junction' to Kala Nagar have been recommended to bypass potential congestion points, notably Raheja Marg and Mahim Causeway, where significant foot traffic is expected.

Mumbai Traffic Police Advisory

Additionally, the Mumbai Traffic Police have outlined specific routes affected by the Muharram processions on X, formerly known as Twitter, starting from 4 pm onwards. These routes include P. Ismail Merchant Chowk (Nesbit Junction), Sofia Zuber Junction, Sir J.J. Junction, I.R. Road, Pakmodia Street, and Jainbia Hall, which are anticipated to experience increased traffic and temporary closures to accommodate the religious gatherings.

Residents are advised to stay informed through BMC and Mumbai Police updates, follow designated diversions, and cooperate with authorities to ensure a smooth and safe passage during this period.
