Mumbai Traffic Police Collect ₹40 Lakh In Two-Week Crackdown On Auto, Taxi Violations

A two-week crackdown on rule infractions by cab and autorickshaw drivers has resulted in the collection of nearly ₹40.25 lakh in fines by the Mumbai Traffic Police. The campaign, which ran from April 18 to May 4, focused on a number of violations, chief among them the reluctance of drivers to transport passengers, which is a common grievance among city commuters.

Over 48,000 e-challans were issued as a result of the drive, which was led by Joint Commissioner of Traffic Anil Kumbhare. A noteworthy 28,814 of these were given to drivers who declined to take passengers. In an effort to make a clear statement about accountability and compliance, authorities are now taking action to suspend these offenders' licenses through a number of Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).

Traffic officers not only punished refusals but also severely enforced other common infractions. 1,164 drivers in all received fines for failing to wear their required uniforms. An additional 6,268 were fined for transporting more people than permitted by law. A total of 12,171 challans were issued for various other violations, such as reckless or dangerous driving, unauthorised parking, and signal jumping.

Police officials claim that the widespread action was brought on by persistent public complaints regarding the dangerous and obstructive attitude of numerous taxi and auto drivers. The enforcement campaign sought to improve passenger convenience, foster a sense of accountability among transportation service providers, and guarantee greater adherence to traffic laws.

The ₹40.25 lakh in fines collected in just two weeks, according to officials, shows how serious the issue is and how widespread non-compliance is in the industry. The exercise also shows how dedicated the traffic department is to raising the bar for Mumbai's public transport system.

The traffic police have made hints about potential future launches of similar initiatives. Authorities intend to keep pressure on negligent drivers and guarantee safer, more efficient urban transit for the city's millions of daily commuters through constant monitoring and potentially harsher disciplinary measures.
