Mumbai To Goa In 30 Minutes? NHAI's Mega Expressway Will Cut Travel Time; Link Key Ports, Highways & Airports
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is poised to kickstart a groundbreaking project that aims to revolutionise connectivity in Mumbai. A new expressway, stretching 30 kilometres from Pagote, near the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), to Chauk Junction on the old Pune Highway, is in the pipeline, according to Times Of India (TOI) report.
This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,700 crore, is not just about linking key points but is set to significantly cut down travel times. For instance, the journey from Mumbai to the highway leading to Goa will be reduced to a mere 20-30 minutes from the Atal Setu.
This corridor is strategically planned to weave through the Uran-Chirner Highway (beginning as Amra Marg from Navi Mumbai), the Goa Highway, and the Pune Expressway. It promises convenient entry and exit points along its route, enhancing accessibility for thousands of vehicles that traverse these paths daily. Notably, at the Sewri end of Atal Setu, this expressway will seamlessly connect to the Coastal Road and Sea Link near Worli, further integrating Mumbai's transport network.
Expanding Mumbai's Connectivity Horizon
Looking beyond the immediate, the NHAI has grand plans for future extensions that will link this corridor with several key routes. These include the Alibaug-Virar Multimodal Corridor, the Murbad-Junnar Highway, the Samruddhi Expressway, and the Nashik Highway near Padgha. The route will extend further to connect with the Vadodara-Mumbai Greenfield Expressway, a segment of the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor currently under construction. Once these expansions are completed, the 30km stretch up to Chauk will effectively serve as a ring road parallel to the Alibaug-Virar Corridor, ensuring access-controlled, uninterrupted travel.
As per the TOI report, NHAI regional manager Anshumali Shrivastav highlighted the immense benefits this corridor will bring, notably in decongesting roads and improving travel times. "The proposed six-lane greenfield corridor will require the acquisition of approximately 176 hectares of land and will help decongest critical junctions in Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Kalamboli. This will improve logistical efficiency for freight transport in port and airport zones while driving economic growth and industrial development by reducing travel time and distances for traffic to JNPT, Goa, Pune, and Mumbai," said Shrivastav, chief general manager of NHAI's western region.
The project has already cleared major hurdles, securing environmental and other essential clearances. It's set to tackle the congestion issue head-on, streamlining traffic for over 10,000 vehicles, including multi-axle container trucks, that currently navigate through various disconnected stretches of highways. This initiative is a significant step toward enhancing the logistical efficiency and economic growth of the region.
A Timeline of Development
The first phase of this expressway, covering the initial 30 kilometres stretch, is expected to be up and running within 30 months. Work orders are on the brink of being issued, with construction slated to start within the next seven months. This level of efficiency and planning underscores the NHAI's commitment to improving India's infrastructure, promising a future of smoother, faster journeys for both goods and travellers alike.
