Mumbai Sees COVID-19 Surge In May; BMC Increases Monitoring, Tracks JN.1 Variant

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped up its surveillance efforts as COVID-19 continues to spread sporadically. In addition to COVID-19 monitoring, the BMC reported on Wednesday that it continues to monitor cases of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI). Tests are being conducted on suspected instances, and those who test positive are being treated according to recognised guidelines. In order to find variations, monitor transmission patterns, and enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, genome sequencing is also being carried out on positive samples.

The significance of following COVID-appropriate behaviour is being emphasised by BMC health experts. They have guaranteed that public health labs are completely furnished to meet the demands of sequencing and testing. Mumbai's health department is keeping a careful eye on the issue. There have been cases of H3N2 and other respiratory viruses co-infecting, according to genomic study. Reports of COVID-related deaths are presently being examined by the death audit committee.

Genome sequencing is still being done as a precaution even though there aren't many ongoing COVID-19 cases in Mumbai and they shouldn't be a reason for alarm right now. For additional genomic testing, positive samples from all around Maharashtra are being transferred to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and BJ Medical College in Pune.

Mumbai's Monthly COVID Tally

In January and February, the city reported one case each. There were no reported cases in March. April saw four cases, while May saw a significant spike with 120 confirmed cases. As of the latest update, 21,046 patients have recovered in the city.

National Situation

The number of COVID-19 instances in India is gradually increasing; as of May 19, 2025, there were 257 active cases reported nationwide, according to government data. While not concerning at this point, the rise is occurring at the same time as new outbreaks in Singapore and Hong Kong, which are being caused by newly discovered Omicron subvariants like JN.1.

With 69 ongoing cases, Kerala is in first place, followed by Tamil Nadu with 34 and Maharashtra with 44. Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim are among the other states that have reported new cases. Increased caution was prompted when two COVID-related deaths were reported at Mumbai's KEM Hospital.

Understanding the JN.1 Variant

A recently discovered sub-lineage of the Omicron variety is the JN.1 variant. It spreads just as readily as Omicron, but it has a different mutation in the spike protein, which gives the virus the ability to bind to and enter human cells. Severe instances might last for months, although mild to moderate infections usually last one to two weeks. Some virus-infected people don't show any symptoms, yet they can still spread the infection to other people.

Hong Kong recently had 31 deaths in a single week, the greatest number in a year, and Singapore reported a 28% increase in weekly COVID-19 cases. Public health professionals are warning Indians to exercise caution and continue their preventive measures in light of these trends, particularly in high-risk locations.

Despite low overall figures, authorities are advising the public to remain alert and continue practicing safety protocols such as vaccination, proper hygiene, and regular monitoring to prevent any potential resurgence.
