Mumbai’s Famous Tiffin Service To Pause On July 7—Here’s The Reason Why

Mumbai's famed dabbawalas, known worldwide for their near-perfect lunchbox delivery system, will pause their operations on July 7, 2025. This one-day suspension is to allow the majority of them-many of whom are followers of the Varkari sect-to participate in the annual Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage to Pandharpur, Maharashtra. The tradition holds profound spiritual and cultural significance within the community.

Ashadhi Ekadashi, also referred to as Devashayani Ekadashi, marks the culmination of the Pandharpur Wari-an age-old pilgrimage that sees millions of Warkaris (devotees) walk hundreds of kilometers to the temple of Lord Vithoba (Vitthal) in Pandharpur. The journey, often spanning up to 250 kilometers, is undertaken as an expression of devotion, penance, and spiritual purification. Devotees engage in singing bhajans and abhangs, chanting the deity's name, and joining vibrant processions that carry palkhis (palanquins) of revered saints such as Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar.

For the dabbawalas, the Wari is far more than a religious observance-it represents a reaffirmation of the core values of their community: devotion, humility, service, and social equality. The pilgrimage is a powerful unifier, transcending caste and class divisions in a shared spiritual journey. On Ashadhi Ekadashi, worshippers fast, offer special prayers, and seek divine blessings from Lord Vithoba, as the day is believed to be especially sacred for spiritual transformation.

The decision to suspend tiffin services on July 7 highlights the deep-rooted commitment of the dabbawala community to this enduring tradition. Lunchbox deliveries will resume on July 8, once the pilgrimage and associated observances are completed.
