Mumbai’s Bellasis Flyover Opens Today: New Tardeo–Mumbai Central Link To Ease South City Traffic

The newly constructed Bellasis flyover in south Mumbai, connecting Tardeo with Mumbai Central railway station, is scheduled to open for vehicular traffic on February 26, 2026, with an inauguration ceremony planned at 11 am through a digital launch.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will lead the online inauguration, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, while Mayor Ritu Tawde is expected to be present at the site during the formal opening. Vehicular movement will begin on the flyover once the official event concludes and temporary arrangements are cleared.

Connectivity Boost For South Mumbai

Civic authorities have identified the new structure as a railway flyover that links key south Mumbai locations including Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central. Officials said the project is expected to improve connectivity along one of the city's busiest transport corridors and reduce travel time once traffic begins using the bridge.

The flyover has also drawn attention after its construction was completed nearly 15 months ahead of the scheduled deadline, with core works wrapped up in January 2026. However, the public opening was delayed due to scheduling constraints and discussions regarding a possible renaming of the bridge.

Bellasis Flyover Replaces 130-Year-Old Bridge

The new structure replaces an older bridge that was built in 1893 and had remained in service for more than a century. Following a structural audit that declared the previous bridge unsafe, it was demolished in June 2024.

Subsequently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioned a new cable-stayed flyover designed to accommodate current traffic demands and ease congestion between Nagpada and Tardeo.

The Bellasis flyover measures:

Total length: 333 metres

Railway span: 36.90 metres

Carriageway width: 7 metres

Footpaths: Broad pedestrian walkways on both sides

Officials said the wider walkways have been included to improve pedestrian safety along the stretch.

With traffic set to begin today, residents and daily commuters in south Mumbai are expected to benefit from a shorter and safer road link between Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central, while also reducing pressure on nearby junctions during peak hours.
