Mumbai Rains Update: Traffic Police Identify Slow-Moving Routes Amid Heavy Rain; Check List To Avoid Delays

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across Mumbai today, leading to severe waterlogging and widespread traffic disruptions in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day, with possible thunderstorms expected tonight.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai received over 300 millimetres of rainfall between 01:00 am and 07:00 am today, causing extensive waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas. Suburban train services have been severely affected due to the heavy rains.

In response to the situation, BMC has declared a holiday for all BMC, Government, and Private schools and colleges in the Mumbai area for the first session to avoid inconvenience to students. The announcement was made on a social media site, X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mumbai Traffic Police reported significant waterlogging from Saki Naka Metro Station Peninsula Junction to Tilak Nagar in Andheri (E), with water levels reaching 1.5 to 2 feet. Although water levels are receding, traffic movement remains slow.

Areas severely affected by traffic congestion due to heavy downpours include Sakkar Chowk Wadala Shivaji Road, Andheri Subway S.V Road, Hindmata Junction, and Sainath Subway.

In addition to the rain-related woes, Mumbai Traffic Police have reported multiple vehicle breakdowns causing traffic snarls at various critical points:

Meanwhile, Central Railway services are experiencing delays with mainline services suspended between CSMT and Thane due to waterlogging, while Down and Up slow lines are operational. Harbour line services are temporarily halted at Chunabhatti station due to waterlogging.

Authorities have urged citizens to refrain from believing in rumours and to venture out of their homes only if necessary. BMC officials are actively engaged in field operations to manage the situation.
