Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Konkan, More Showers In Next 24 Hours
Mumbai and surrounding regions have been hit with intense rainfall, thick cloud cover, and strong winds since early morning on Monday, July 21, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the Konkan region, excluding Palghar, warning of continued heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, the downpour is being driven by strong easterly monsoon winds. Shubhangi Bhute, Director of IMD Mumbai, confirmed that Santacruz recorded 150 mm of rainfall since 8:30 AM this morning. Other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, also witnessed heavy showers.

Authorities have started issuing SMS and radio alerts across MMR, cautioning residents about potential flooding and advising them to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, especially over the next 3-4 hours.

The IMD has outlined specific weather warnings for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar for the period between July 21 and July 25:
Palghar District:
- July 21: Thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph
- July 22: Thunderstorms, moderate rain, and winds of 30-40 kmph
- July 23 & 24: Heavy rain expected at isolated locations
- July 25: Moderate rainfall predicted
Thane District:
- July 21: Heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (50-60 kmph)
- July 22: Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and winds (40-50 kmph)
- July 23: Isolated areas to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall
- July 24: Heavy rain forecasted at several locations
- July 25: Moderate rainfall expected
Mumbai District:
- July 21: Heavy to very heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds
- July 22: Thunderstorms with heavy rain and winds (40-50 kmph)
- July 23: Heavy rain likely in a few areas
- July 24: Isolated areas may see heavy to very heavy rainfall
- July 25: Heavy rain expected at isolated locations
Residents and commuters in the affected areas are urged to follow updates, take precautions, and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities have asked citizens to remain alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone zones.
