Mumbai-Pune Highway Submerged: Drivers Struggle As Authorities Fail To Address Drainage Issues
A section of the Mumbai-Pune highway has been submerged for over a week due to a blocked stormwater drain in Khopoli The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation failed to clean the drain before the monsoon, leading to severe traffic congestion. Some drivers attempt to navigate through the water, but activists claim that neither the corporation nor the Khopoli municipal council is addressing the issue.
The corporation has issued a notice to a builder, instructing them to clear the drain. The Mumbai-bound lane of the highway is frequently flooded for about one kilometre on this stretch. Consequently, vehicles start using the Pune-bound lane, causing traffic jams. Heavy rains have exacerbated the situation by flooding both lanes, resulting in many vehicles breaking down and adding to motorists' troubles.

Mumbai-Pune Highway Traffic
Locals argue that this part of the highway was not constructed with adequate elevation or height, which contributes to its frequent flooding. This ongoing issue has led to significant disruptions and safety concerns for daily commuters. The lack of proper drainage maintenance before the monsoon season has only worsened these problems.
In another incident on the same expressway, questions have been raised about how a tractor managed to enter despite a ban and CCTV surveillance. Concerns about the effectiveness of these monitoring systems have surfaced, although authorities maintain that patrolling efforts are in place but acknowledge room for improvement.
Mumbai-Pune Highway Accidents
A tragic accident involving a luxury bus and an unauthorised tractor on the Mumbai-Pune expressway resulted in five deaths and 44 injuries. The bus was carrying pilgrims when it collided with the tractor, leading to a fatal crash. Authorities are investigating how the tractor accessed the expressway and are working on measures to prevent such incidents in future.

Another accident near Panvel on this expressway claimed five lives and injured over 40 pilgrims travelling for Aashadhi Ekadashi celebrations. Those injured are receiving treatment at MGM Hospital. Although traffic disruptions occurred following this incident, they have since been resolved.
Heavy rains have led to flooding on both carriageways of this highway stretch. Many vehicles have broken down due to water damage, further complicating travel for motorists. Activists continue to press for immediate action from both local authorities and state agencies to address these recurring issues effectively.
The persistent flooding highlights significant gaps in infrastructure maintenance and emergency preparedness along this crucial route between Mumbai and Pune. Ensuring proper drainage systems and effective monitoring can help mitigate such problems in future monsoon seasons.
