Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Project: Final Stretch Nears Completion, New Deadline Announced
The ambitious Rs 6,695 crore Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link project is nearing completion, with 92 per cent of the work already finished, according to an Urban Acres report. The final stretch involves constructing a cable-stayed bridge near Tiger Valley in Lonavala. The towering pylons of the bridge, reaching a height of 180 metres, present the last hurdle in this challenging endeavour.
Originally targeted for completion in March 2024, the project was delayed to January 2025 and is now expected to be finished by August 2025. As per the same report, Anilkumar Gaikwad, Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that 12.4 kilometres of the 13 kilometres missing link is complete. While the bridge's superstructure is almost finished, high-altitude construction and strong winds at heights of 100 metres have slowed progress.
Once operational, the new route will cut travel time between Khopoli and Sinhgad Institute by over six kilometres, saving approximately 25 minutes. It will also alleviate congestion at the Adoshi tunnel and Khandala exit, where traffic currently merges with NH-4, causing significant delays. The project is designed to handle 85 per cent of the expressway's current traffic, offering much-needed relief to daily commuters.
However, the frequent delays have frustrated many travellers. Ramesh Kumar, a regular commuter from Pune, expressed his exasperation in the report: "We've been waiting for years, and every time there's a new completion date, it gets pushed back. It's incredibly frustrating."
MSRDC officials emphasised that safety remains their top priority, particularly for the complex cable-stayed bridge. Gaikwad explained that the challenging terrain and high-altitude conditions near Lonavala have contributed to the delays.
In addition to the missing link project, MSRDC is planning to widen the expressway from six lanes to eight, a Rs 5,000-6,000 crore project pending approval. This expansion would involve acquiring approximately 100 hectares of land and constructing tunnels, with an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore for the latter. If approved, this project would take another three years to complete.
The extended expressway and the missing link are also expected to extend toll collection by 15 years, beyond the current contract period ending in 2030. While the missing link promises faster and smoother travel, the prolonged delays have tested the patience of commuters.
As the project progresses, many hope the August 2025 deadline will finally mark its completion. The missing link is set to transform connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, easing traffic and enhancing the journey for thousands of commuters.
