Mumbai-Pune Expressway Expansion: MSRDC Plans 8 Lanes To Meet Growing Traffic Demand

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a vital route connecting the state's financial capital, Mumbai, and the cultural hub, Pune, is becoming increasingly congested as the number of vehicles continues to rise, as per the Loksatta report. To address safety concerns and accommodate growing traffic, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has proposed expanding the highway to eight lanes. The proposal has been submitted to the state government for approval, but it is still pending. Here's what we know about the upcoming project.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway History

Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway was conceived in 1990 to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune. The existing Mumbai-Pune Highway, a legacy of the British era, was expected to become inadequate as traffic volumes grew. The MSRDC took on the task of constructing a new expressway, with work commencing in 1998 after a tender process in 1997. The 94.5-kilometre highway was completed in 2002, significantly cutting the Mumbai-Pune journey from four to five hours to just two to two and a half hours. It became one of the busiest highways in the country and was named after Yashwantrao Chavan, Maharashtra's first Chief Minister, in 2009.

Rising Traffic On Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Currently, around 155,000 vehicles travel on the expressway daily, making it the busiest in the state. As the number of vehicles continues to rise, the six-lane highway is increasingly unable to handle the volume. Traffic jams and accidents have become more frequent, highlighting the need for expansion. MSRDC's proposal to widen the highway to eight lanes aims to reduce congestion and improve safety.

Eight-Lane Expansion For Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The eight-lane expansion project is expected to cost approximately Rs 6,800 crore. The work will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will focus on widening the roads and bridges, while the second phase will involve tunnel expansion. Land acquisition for the first phase has already been completed, making it easier to begin work. Acquiring land for the second phase is expected to be straightforward as well. MSRDC is anticipating that the project, once approved, will take at least three years to complete, with the expected completion date being 2028-29.

Waiting For State Approval

The detailed proposal for the eight-lane expansion was submitted to the state government in February 2024. However, the approval has not yet been granted, delaying the project. MSRDC is following up with the state government, and it is hoped that the new administration will approve the proposal soon. The funding for the project is expected to be Rs 6,080 crore, and MSRDC has proposed two options for financing: either the state government makes a budgetary provision or extends the toll collection period on the expressway.

MSRDC is closely monitoring the approval process and hopes to begin work as soon as the state government makes a decision on the funding model. If approved, the expansion will significantly improve travel between Mumbai and Pune, offering smoother, safer journeys for commuters.
