Mumbai's plan for an online parking booking system, an ambitious project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is facing delays due to the lack of response from the company responsible for developing the necessary software and infrastructure. Originally designed to cover 3,000 parking spaces, the BMC has now scaled down the pilot project to include only 560 parking lots.

The initiative is part of the efforts by the Mumbai Parking Authority to expand public parking spaces in the city. The BMC has started constructing new parking facilities, including multi-storeyed and mechanical parking lots. To ensure transparency, a web-based and mobile application-based booking and payment system is being planned.

"We had invited tenders in March to develop the software for 3,000 parking lots, but no response was received. Therefore, we have temporarily reduced the project to 560 parking lots," a BMC official explained. The estimated cost for developing the system for 3,000 parking spaces is approximately Rs 700 crore.

The planned system will incorporate advanced technology, including video analytics and magnetic sensors, to monitor parking occupancy. These sensors will provide real-time data on available parking slots. The system will also track vehicle entry and exit from parking lots, allowing motorists to check the availability of spaces through the mobile application. Additionally, users will be able to pay for parking via the app, ensuring a more streamlined and efficient process.

Although the online parking system is highly anticipated, the delays have left many waiting for its full implementation. The BMC remains committed to launching the pilot project and expanding it in the future, provided the necessary development support is received.
