After suffering for 42 years, Mumbai nurse Aruna Shanbaug passes away
Mumbai, May 18: Mumbai nurse Aruna Shanbaug, who was in coma for over 40 years after being brutally raped passed away today.
Shanbaug, who suffered a brutal sexual assault at KEM Hospital 42 years ago was lying in a vegetative state ever.
Shanbaug was put on ventilator last week after she suffered from pneumonia. The Supreme Court had rejected a petition seeking euthanasia for Shanbaug.
Shanbaug was brutally raped by the ward boy of the hospital-Sohanlal Bartha Valmiki- on the night of November 27, 1973. Valmiki attacked her and sodomised her in the hospital basement.
Shanbaug was left cortically blind after the incident and was in a coma since then. Valmiki, on the other hand, served a sentence of seven years in prison after which he was let off.
