Mumbai Monsoon Preparedness: Hospitals Expand Beds Amid Staffing Demands
In preparation for the monsoon season and the looming threat of diseases such as dengue and malaria, Mumbai's municipal administration has launched extended outpatient services across all hospitals. The initiative includes evening outpatient departments and a significant increase in hospital bed capacity.
The municipality aims to bolster its healthcare infrastructure with round-the-clock "Fever OPD" services and enhanced diagnostic capabilities, expanding the number of treatment laboratories from 20 to 800.

Despite these proactive measures, the Municipal Employees Workers' Sena has raised concerns over staffing shortages. The union has urged the Commissioner to swiftly fill vacancies and appoint additional personnel to manage the increased workload.
The demand for reinforcements comes amidst a challenging scenario where a substantial number of municipal employees are yet to return to duty after being deployed for interim tasks like the Maratha reservation survey and recent Lok Sabha elections. This shortage has placed immense pressure on the existing workforce, impacting their ability to deliver essential services effectively.
Currently, there are over 52,000 vacant scheduled posts across various departments within the municipality, including critical roles within hospitals. The shortage not only strains the healthcare delivery system but also jeopardizes patient care during the monsoon season, prompting calls for urgent recruitment to alleviate the burden on staff.
Union President Baba Kadam and Vice President Dr. Sanjay Kamble-Baperkar have emphasized the immediate need for additional manpower to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services amid the seasonal health challenges facing Mumbai.
The municipality's efforts to expand healthcare access and improve service delivery are contingent upon addressing these staffing gaps, ensuring resilience in combating monsoon-related health risks effectively.
