Mumbai Metro Set For A Major Update On July 16 — What You Need To Know Before You Ride
Mumbai Metro commuters are in for a major upgrade starting July 16, as the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has announced an increase in the number of daily services on Metro Lines 2A and 7-from 284 to 305. This includes the addition of 21 new services during peak hours to accommodate growing passenger demand.
To support this expansion, MMMOCL will introduce three new trainsets and reduce train headway from 6 minutes 35 seconds to just 5 minutes 50 seconds, enabling faster and more frequent service. The development was confirmed through a post on X by the official MMMOCL handle, @MMMOCL_Official.

This move comes amid surging ridership numbers. On July 8, Mumbai Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali) hit a record daily ridership of 3,01,127 passengers-a new milestone in the city's public transit history. The same day also saw the highest-ever adoption of WhatsApp ticketing, with 62,282 commuters choosing the digital platform, reflecting a shift toward more sustainable and tech-driven commuting options.
The two lines have become critical lifelines for Mumbai's western suburbs, significantly reducing road congestion and offering a reliable, air-conditioned travel experience for lakhs of daily travellers.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA and Chairman of MMMOCL, stated, "Maha Mumbai Metro has crossed 3 lakh daily riders for the first time. This significant milestone reflects Mumbai's growing bond with the Maha Mumbai Metro. My heartfelt thanks to the people of Mumbai and congratulations to our dedicated team for making this possible."
