Mumbai Metro Line 11 Proposal Reviewed: ₹23,487-Crore Fully Underground Project Planned

The central government is currently reviewing a ₹23,487-crore proposal for Mumbai Metro's entirely underground Line 11, which will span 17.4 km from Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has finalized the route and submitted the proposal for formal approval, with funding assistance sought from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Key Features of Metro Line 11

Route: Anik Depot (Sion) to Gateway of India, passing through Wadala, Byculla, Nagpada, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, Horniman Circle, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Length: 17.4 kilometers, almost entirely underground.

Stations: 14 stations, including 13 underground stations and one at-grade terminal at Anik Depot.

Integrated Depot: A modern vertically stacked facility at Anik combining Metro and BEST bus depots to optimize land use.

Implementation: The project will be executed by MMRCL. Preparatory work will progress alongside JICA loan negotiations, with major construction expected to begin by late 2026 or early 2027 once clearances are obtained.

Next Steps

The Centre's review will involve a detailed assessment of costs, financial structuring, and urban impact before granting formal approval. The alignment is designed to ease congestion along some of Mumbai's busiest and most historic corridors and will connect with the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali).

This project represents a major step in improving connectivity for eastern South Mumbai and marks the city's second fully underground metro line, following the Aqua Line.
