Mumbai Metro Coach Fills With Smoke At Devipada Station Following Bus Fire

Chaos broke out on Tuesday afternoon at Mumbai's Devipada Metro Station on the Red Line after smoke from a burning bus entered a metro coach, causing panic among passengers. The bus fire occurred on the Western Express Highway in Borivali, directly beneath the elevated metro station. Though no casualties were reported, the incident sparked fear and confusion among commuters.

A private bus, which was reportedly empty at the time, caught fire near the station. As thick smoke rose from the blaze, a metro train arrived at Devipada station and came to a stop. A video captured by commuter Yogesh Namjoshi, which has since gone viral on social media, shows tense scenes inside a coach as passengers struggled to understand what was happening while smoke filled the air.

Namjoshi, who posted the footage on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that the train stopped at the station and opened its doors despite visible smoke from the fire below. "There were no announcements and the smoke inside was getting thicker before the doors finally closed again," he wrote.

Firefighters and metro personnel rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control swiftly. Preliminary investigations indicate no foul play and no damage to the metro station or its infrastructure.

Maha Mumbai Metro Responds, Assures Safety and Continuity of Services
In the aftermath of the incident and growing public concern online, Maha Mumbai Metro Operations released an official statement to address the situation. "We regret the inconvenience caused to our valued passengers," the statement read. "A private bus on the road below Devipada station caught fire today in the afternoon. Metro staff and fire brigade responded swiftly and brought the situation under control."

Officials clarified that due to the open design of the station, smoke briefly entered the platform area and one coach of the halted train when the doors opened. The situation was quickly contained at the next station with no threat to passenger safety.

"There was no fire or hazard inside the train itself. Metro services continued safely and without interruption," the agency added, thanking passengers for their cooperation and patience.

While the incident was resolved without injuries, it has prompted renewed concerns over emergency preparedness and communication in elevated metro stations, especially those located above busy urban roadways.
