Mumbai Metro 7A Tunnel Update: Mira Road-To-Mumbai Airport Link Nears Reality, Twin Tunnels Ready By May-End
Work on Mumbai's upcoming Metro Line 7A - which will connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T2) to Andheri East - is progressing steadily. According to a Lokmat report, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the second tunnel of this underground metro route is likely to be completed by the end of May. This milestone will mark a significant step forward for the project.
What Is Metro 7A?
Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometre-long route that will include two metro stations: an elevated station at Airport Colony and an underground station at Terminal 2 (T2) of the international airport. The line will feature both elevated and underground sections, making it a technically complex undertaking.

Mumbai Metro 7A: Key features
Total Length: 3.4 kilometres (0.94 km elevated, 2.503 km underground)
Stations: 2 (Airport Colony - elevated; T2 - underground)
Tunnel Length: 2.035 kilometres of twin tunnels
Tunnel Diameter: 6.35 metres
Viaduct (elevated section): 0.57 kilometres
Ramp: 0.309 kilometre
Mumbai Metro 7A: Tunnel Progress
The downline tunnel - approximately 1.65 kilometres long - has already been completed with the help of the 'Disha' tunnel boring machine (TBM). Now, only around 100 metres of tunnelling work remains for the second tunnel. MMRDA officials expect this final stretch to be finished by the end of May.
Once tunnelling is completed, it will take approximately one and a half years to finalise all other construction work and begin operations. At present, 59 per cent of the entire Metro 7A project is complete, with full completion targeted for December 2026.
A Boost For Connectivity
The Metro 7A line will offer direct connectivity between Mira Bhayandar and Mumbai International Airport (T2). It will link with Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 7, creating a seamless route for commuters across the city.
This integration is expected to greatly benefit passengers, especially those travelling to and from the airport, by reducing travel time and offering a smooth alternative to road and rail transport.
A Step Towards A Wider Metro Network
The Metro 7A project is part of MMRDA's larger plan to expand Mumbai's metro network. With the goal of reducing dependence on traditional rail services, the authority is focusing on underground and elevated metro routes that will ease congestion and improve daily commuting for millions of residents.
As construction progresses, commuters can look forward to a more connected, efficient, and reliable transport system in the near future.
