Mumbai Metro 3 Update: Aqua Line Nears Completion, Final Stretch Awaits Safety Nod

Mumbai's first fully underground metro corridor, the 33.5-km Metro Line 3 Aqua Line, is on the verge of completion, bringing a transformative shift to the city's transport network. Stretching from Aarey in the western suburbs to Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai, the mega project has been rolled out in phases after multiple delays, and is now preparing for its final milestone.

Current Status Of Metro Line 3

According to Report by FPJ the remaining Worli-Cuffe Parade segment, the last stretch of the Aqua Line, is awaiting fire safety clearance before it undergoes inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). According to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) Managing Director Ashwini Bhide, full-fledged operations can only commence once CMRS approval is granted. This will pave the way for Mumbai's most ambitious infrastructure project to become fully operational.

The Aqua Line has already been energised along its entire stretch since July 23, 2025, when MMRCL activated the 25 kV traction line. This milestone enabled trial runs between Worli and Colaba Cuffe Parade. Although the final launch was initially targeted for August, the need for safety trials and clearances has pushed back the schedule slightly. Once CMRS clears the corridor, Mumbai will have its first fully underground metro line in operation.

Phased Rollout So Far

Metro Line 3 has been inaugurated in stages. The first stretch, connecting Aarey-JVLR to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), was launched on October 7, 2024, and provided suburban commuters a direct route to Mumbai's financial hub. The second phase, covering BKC to Worli's Acharya Atre Chowk, was inaugurated on May 9, 2025, and became operational the following day. Together, these two sections span 22.5 km and have already seen high passenger turnout. The last leg from Worli to Cuffe Parade will finally establish seamless north-south metro connectivity across the city.

Ridership Growth And Milestones

The Aqua Line reached a major benchmark on August 28, when it crossed 1 crore in cumulative ridership. Currently stretching from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk, the corridor has quickly been embraced as a faster and more dependable travel option. Once fully functional, Metro Line 3 is projected to carry 4.5 lakh passengers daily, with ridership expected to rise to 6.5 lakh trips over time. Travel time between South Mumbai and the western suburbs will be cut significantly, with the added advantage of direct metro access to both domestic and international airports-a demand long voiced by Mumbai residents.

Strategic Importance Of The Corridor

The 33.5-km Aqua Line will strengthen last-mile connectivity across Mumbai by linking six business districts, 30 major office hubs, 12 educational institutions, 11 hospitals, 10 transport nodes, and 25 cultural and religious sites. It will also integrate with the city's existing suburban rail systems at Churchgate and CSMT, while easing pressure on heavily congested corridors like the Western Express Highway.

Beyond these functional gains, Metro Line 3 also symbolizes Mumbai's infrastructural leap forward, introducing India's first fully underground metro corridor at such scale and setting a benchmark for future transport projects.

What Lies Ahead

With safety inspections in the final stage, the project is on the brink of completion. Once CMRS approval is granted, the Aqua Line will open in its entirety, reshaping Mumbai's daily commute and easing the burden on existing road and rail networks for decades to come.
