Mumbai Marine Drive Tetrapods To Be Replaced By 2025: Here’s What’s Changing
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a proposal to replace the aging tetrapods along Marine Drive, ensuring coastal protection for the next century. The new tetrapods, made of high-grade M40 cement, are designed to last 100 years, as per the Midday report.
The existing tetrapods, installed between 1960 and 1965 and partially replaced between 1982 and 2002, were constructed using M20-grade cement with a lifespan of around 40 years. Their durability has now reached its limit. Some were further damaged by Cyclone Nisarga, while others were removed due to the Coastal Road project.

"It's not feasible to shift the old tetrapods back into position. Since their lifespan is over, we have decided to replace them," explained a civic official according to the report. The BMC has allocated Rs 43.61 crore for the replacement work, which is expected to be completed by May 2025.
Tetrapods play a crucial role in preventing soil erosion and protecting the coast by dispersing the energy of waves. "The new tetrapods will offer enhanced protection due to the use of stronger materials," the official added as per the Midday report.
During the construction of the Coastal Road, a three-kilometre stretch of Marine Drive's tetrapods was removed, leading to damage to parts of the iconic promenade. The restoration of these sections was completed last year.
In 2021, residents of two buildings along Marine Drive reported vibrations in their apartments, which were linked to waves hitting the unprotected coast. In response, the BMC temporarily reinstalled tetrapods near these buildings.
With the replacement project underway, Marine Drive's coastline will receive long-term reinforcement, maintaining its role as a key protective barrier and preserving the charm of the historic promenade.
