Mumbai Local Train Services Update: Rs 12,500 Crore Plan To Improve Suburban And Long-Distance Routes
Railway authorities have proposed a major expansion of Mumbai's rail network to improve connectivity and ease congestion on existing lines, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. The plan includes a new suburban rail corridor and the expansion of two existing lines, which will help separate local and long-distance trains. The project aims to strengthen the mass transit system in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, and areas north of Kalyan. According to officials, these projects are part of phase 3B of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) and are estimated to cost Rs 12,500 crore.
A key component of the plan is the construction of a 60-kilometre-long suburban rail corridor along the Panvel-Vasai belt, which is expected to cost Rs 10,000 crore. Additionally, upgrades to the Asangaon-Kasara route are estimated at Rs 2,500 crore. However, these projects have not yet been approved, and discussions between railway authorities and the Maharashtra government are still ongoing. Officials have stated that about 20-25 per cent of the new rail corridor would be elevated.
Vilas Wadekar, chairperson and managing director of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), said in the same report, "This will ensure that the suburban rail network gets segregated. Apart from expanding existing rail corridors, one of the critical additions would be the new suburban line on the Panvel-Vasai route. We have also planned two elevated rail flyovers from Vasai, one each towards Virar and Borivali."
The proposed elevated rail flyovers will enable local trains to operate from Panvel via Thane-Diva towards Virar, Dahanu, Borivali, and Andheri based on passenger demand. Railway sources have indicated that the new corridor will significantly improve connectivity on both the Main and Harbour lines of Central and Western Railways.
The new suburban corridor is also expected to pass through the dedicated freight corridor and Kalamboli Yard. Additionally, it may provide access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the rail terminus in Panvel, officials said.
Currently, the Vasai-Panvel line is mainly used for long-distance and freight trains, while local trains operate on the trans-harbour rail corridor connecting Thane and Panvel. Another rail corridor links Nerul, Belapur, and Uran.
In addition to these projects, construction is in progress for a new suburban rail corridor on the Panvel-Karjat section at a cost of Rs 2,782 crore. Officials have confirmed that 70 per cent of the work has been completed, and the project is expected to be finished by December.
