Mumbai Local Train Services: Check Central Railways' New Upgrades To Tackle Floods And Prevent Disruptions
Mumbai's local train services are facing disruptions due to the persistent heavy rains affecting the metropolis, leading to significant inconvenience for passengers. In response, the Central Railway administration has assured that measures are in place to prevent waterlogging at stations on the Central and Harbour routes.
During the monsoon season, railway operations frequently encounter issues caused by flooding, which can lead to the failure of points and disruptions in train traffic. Common problems include water ingress into point machines, cable failures, and damage to the machines themselves. These issues are exacerbated during severe floods, leading to multiple simultaneous failures.

To address these challenges, the Central Railway has implemented several key upgrades according to Lokmat. The point machines, which control the direction of trains on the tracks, have been improved to minimise the risk of short circuits caused by water contact. This upgrade has been applied to 231 flood-prone locations, significantly enhancing the reliability of the system during adverse weather conditions.
In addition to these improvements, the railway has put in place several other measures to manage water and maintain smooth operations:
1. Water Pumps: A total of 192 pumps have been stationed to efficiently remove accumulated water.
2. Short Tunnels: New short tunnels have been constructed at three critical locations: Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg, Kanjurmarg, and Shiv.
3. Culvert Cleaning: Efforts have been made to clean 156 culverts in key areas including Kurla-Trombe, Chunabhatti, Wadala Road, Vidyavihar-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Tilaknagar.
4. Tree Branch Management: Over six thousand tree branches near overhead wires have been trimmed to prevent any potential interference.
5. Insulator Cleaning: Sixteen thousand insulators have been cleaned to ensure optimal performance and safety.
These proactive steps are designed to enhance the resilience of the railway infrastructure and minimise disruptions for passengers during the rainy season.
