Mumbai Local Train Services: Central Railway To Introduce New AC Train With More Seats
The Central Railway (CR) is set to introduce its first air-conditioned (AC) local train with an underslung motor and electrical system, offering passengers a more comfortable commuting experience, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This innovative design places key components beneath the coaches, increasing seating capacity and providing more space inside the train. The new AC local is expected to begin operations by early summer, bringing much-needed relief for daily commuters.
Extensive Testing Underway

Painted in a striking blue-and-silver livery, the new AC train is currently stationed at the Kurla carshed, where it is undergoing rigorous testing and inspection before its official induction. Rail staff are meticulously examining the train's interiors and systems to ensure optimal performance. The motors, positioned underneath the coaches, free up additional space for passengers inside the compartments.
Greater Efficiency And Improved Capacity
The underslung system, already implemented in Western Railway's AC locals, enhances train stability and maximises available space. Central Railway received this advanced AC local in November 2024, marking a significant upgrade from its existing fleet. According to officials, the new train offers a seating capacity of 1,116 passengers, an increase from the 1,028 seats in previous models, while the standing capacity remains unchanged at 4,936 passengers. Additionally, the train is equipped with upgraded technology to improve performance and commuter convenience.
Expanding The AC Local Fleet
With a growing demand for air-conditioned trains, Central Railway is expanding its fleet with the addition of a seventh AC local, the first new AC rake in two years. At present, CR operates six AC locals, with five in service daily on a rotational basis, providing 66 trips per day. The new train will serve as a backup to ensure smooth operations and minimise disruptions due to maintenance.
"We are not increasing the number of AC train services at this stage, but this addition will help us manage operations better. It will reduce the need for cancellations on weekends when maintenance is required," a CR official stated, as per the HT report.
Challenges During Monsoon
As part of the testing phase, officials are assessing operational challenges, especially during the monsoon season. A key concern is the underslung motor placement, as water accumulation on tracks during heavy rains could impact performance. "This train will slightly improve seating capacity and enhance the passenger experience. However, since the motors are positioned underneath, waterlogging could pose a challenge," explained a CR official, according to the same report.
Notably, CR tracks are positioned lower than those on the Western Railway, making them more vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall. Officials will continue monitoring the train's performance to address any potential issues before it is introduced into daily service.
