Mumbai Lakes Water Level Rises to 99.42 Per Cent: BMC Assures Ample Supply To The City
On Friday morning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared on X, formerly known as Tweeter that the water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which provide drinking water to the city, have reached an impressive 99.42 per cent of their total capacity. Current data shows that the combined water stock in these reservoirs stands at 14,38,959 million litres.
Mumbai sources its water from several key reservoirs: Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, and Modak Sagar.

The BMC's recent report provides detailed insights into the water levels of each lake. Notably, Tansa Lake is currently at 99.10 per cent, while Modak Sagar has reached a near-maximum level of 99.95 per cent. Other lakes show the following water levels: Middle Vaitarna is at 99.33 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 99.79 per cent, Bhatsa at 99.27 per cent, and Vihar Lake is fully saturated at 100 per cent. However, Tulsi Lake has seen a slight dip, with its water level now at 99.56 per cent.
The recent heavy rains have significantly contributed to the rise in water levels. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar on July 25. A remarkable increase occurred on July 24, when Tansa Lake started to overflow around 4 pm, adding to the overall water stock in all seven reservoirs by an impressive 17 days' worth of supply in just one day.
Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, plays a vital role in supplying approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai. It overflowed on July 26, 2024. Additionally, Tulsi Lake, which is one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, began overflowing on July 20 at about 8:30 am, mirroring an overflow event that took place on the same day the previous year at 1:28 pm.
With these reservoirs nearing full capacity, Mumbai is well-positioned to meet its water needs, especially during the heavy monsoon season. The BMC continues to monitor the water levels closely to ensure a steady supply to the city.
