Mumbai Lakes Water Level Reaches 95.27 Per Cent: City’s Drinking Supply Nearly Full Amid Heavy Rain

Mumbai's seven key reservoirs are now filled to 95.27 per cent of their total capacity, according to a report from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday. The total water stock in these lakes is currently 13,78,834 million litres.

The reservoirs supplying Mumbai's drinking water include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. Detailed figures from the BMC indicate the following water levels:

Tansa Lake: 98.53 per cent
Modak Sagar: 100 per cent
Middle Vaitarna: 97.61 per cent
Upper Vaitarna: 94.27 per cent
Bhatsa: 93.23 per cent
Vihar: 100 per cent
Tulsi: 97.71 per cent

Recent heavy rains have caused several of these lakes to overflow. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar Lakes on July 25. Tansa Lake also started overflowing on July 24, significantly increasing the water levels across all seven reservoirs in just one day.

Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, contributes approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai and overflowed on July 26. Similarly, Tulsi Lake, which directly feeds water to the BMC, started overflowing at around 8:30 am on July 20, matching an overflow event from the same day the previous year.
