Mumbai International Airport News: Terminal 1 Expansion To Add 20 Million Passengers Annually
Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) announced on Tuesday that it will demolish and redevelop Terminal 1 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to increase passenger handling capacity, according to a Times Now report. The redevelopment work will begin in phases starting from November 2025. MIAL, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL), stated that the project will be carefully planned to minimise disruption during construction.
The first phase will involve the demolition of the existing structure, followed by the construction of the new terminal. Once completed, the upgraded Terminal 1 will be capable of handling 20 million passengers annually, representing a 42 per cent increase in capacity. The construction is expected to be completed by 2028-29.
During this redevelopment period, Terminal 2 will manage the additional traffic. Additionally, the newly developing Navi Mumbai International Airport, also being developed by the Adani Group, is expected to fill the capacity gap caused by the demolition of Terminal 1. This airport is expected to begin operations later this year.
AAHL Director Jeet Adani commented on the project, saying that the team at CSMIA is working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure smooth operations throughout the transition. He stated, "This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity but also about future-proofing Mumbai's place on the global stage," as quoted by news agency PTI.
The redevelopment of Terminal 1 will ultimately improve the efficiency of the airport, ensuring that it can meet growing demand and maintain its position as a key hub for international travel. The project is a major step in enhancing Mumbai's connectivity and boosting its status in the global aviation sector.
