Mumbai International Airport Fare Hike: Check How Much More You Will Pay

Passengers flying from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) may soon have to pay higher charges. Authorities have proposed a significant increase in the User Development Fee (UDF), which, if approved, will come into effect from the next financial year, according to a Times Now report.

A final decision on the UDF hike will be made in a meeting scheduled for March 25 in Delhi. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates the airport, has put forward the proposal for approval by the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). At the same time, MIAL has also suggested reducing landing and parking charges by 35 per cent.

Proposed Changes In UDF

Currently, international passengers pay a UDF of Rs 187, while domestic passengers are not charged any such fee. Under the new proposal, the UDF for international travellers could rise to Rs 650, and domestic passengers may be required to pay Rs 325. Authorities have also put forward an alternative plan, suggesting an increase in UDF up to Rs 463 for international travellers.

According to sources, "The proposed tariff card, submitted to AERA for approval, is in line with the regulator's previous approvals for MIAL."

Reasons Behind The UDF Increase

The airport, which serves millions of passengers each year, requires modernisation. An official explained that investments are being made to upgrade infrastructure, including self-baggage drop facilities, digital travel solutions, e-gates with facial recognition, improved lounges, and sustainability initiatives.

Reduction In Landing And Parking Charges

While passengers may face higher charges, airlines could benefit from a proposed reduction in landing and parking fees. MIAL has suggested cutting these charges by 35 per cent for the fourth control period (FY2024-2029). AERA, responsible for determining tariffs at major airports, will review and decide on the proposal.

The final decision will be made after considering the feedback from stakeholders in the March 25 meeting in Delhi.
