Mumbai's Highway Horror: Why Your Commute Is Riskier Than Ever

The highways connecting Mumbai to other major cities in India are facing critical issues, turning these essential routes into dangerous and unreliable stretches of road. These vital national highways, crucial for economic activities and efficient transportation, are plagued by poor construction, prolonged delays, and deteriorating conditions.

The Mumbai-Goa National Highway 66, Mumbai-Nashik Highway, and NH 48 are all struggling with significant problems, impacting safety, travel times, and local businesses.

Mumbai-Goa National Highway 66

The Mumbai-Goa National Highway 66, a crucial artery for goods transport from industrial hubs such as Panvel and Indapur, has been under expansion since 2011. Initially promised as a four-lane road that would cut travel time by five hours, the project remains incomplete even after 13 years. The highway's condition has worsened significantly, especially during the monsoon season, with potholes and landslides making it highly perilous. Government assurances of completion by December 2024 have yet to materialize, leaving many sections in disrepair and continuing to pose severe safety risks for commuters.

Mumbai-Nashik Highway

The Mumbai-Nashik highway, designed to enable a swift two-hour trip between the cities, has deteriorated to such an extent that travel times have stretched to six to eight hours. Frequent potholes, ongoing bridge construction, and underpass work contribute to these delays. The central government's promise of a Rs. 5,000 crore upgrade has yet to effectively address these issues. Commuters face not only prolonged journeys but also frequent vehicle damage and heightened driver fatigue due to the appalling road conditions.

National Highway 48

NH 48, linking Mumbai to Palghar, Vasai, and Virar, has become a nightmare for regular commuters, who report spending up to four hours on what should be a short drive. Traffic jams, exacerbated by medical emergencies and poor road conditions, have had a detrimental impact on local businesses. Small and medium enterprises in the area are experiencing significant financial losses due to the disruptions. Despite numerous complaints, the situation remains largely unchanged, with ongoing construction work further complicating travel.

The Root Causes And Government Response

The root causes of these highway issues include mismanagement, poor construction quality, and inadequate planning and coordination among various agencies. The highways are often left incomplete, with potholes and waterlogging leading to accidents and vehicle breakdowns. The government has attributed delays to factors such as heavy vehicle breakdowns, illegal parking, and encroachments, yet effective solutions have not been provided.

Local residents and commuters have protested against these hazardous conditions, calling for urgent improvements to ensure safety and reduce travel times. Despite repeated assurances from authorities, tangible progress has been lacking. The current state of these highways not only endangers lives but also impedes economic growth, underscoring the need for better infrastructure management and accountability.
