Mumbai Rains: Heavy Downpour Causes Waterlogging, Flight Delays As IMD Issues Red Alert

Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Sunday night, bringing the city to a standstill with severe waterlogging, traffic jams, and flight disruptions. Low-lying areas like the Andheri subway were particularly affected by flooding, leading officials to redirect traffic and issue warnings to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai and its suburbs until Monday evening, warning of very heavy rainfall.

The IMD has forecasted that the rain will continue until September 30. An Orange Alert is in place for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad on Monday evening, while a Yellow Alert is set for Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite being used to monsoon disruptions, Sunday's rain highlighted Mumbai's resilience once again. Authorities remain vigilant, urging residents to stay indoors and travel cautiously.

Impact on Air Travel

The downpour also disrupted air travel, prompting advisories from SpiceJet and IndiGo. Both airlines warned of potential traffic delays en route to the airport and advised passengers to check real-time traffic updates and flight statuses before heading out. Mumbai's local train services are also expected to face delays due to the ongoing rainfall.

Mumbai has already exceeded its seasonal rainfall average of 2207 mm. As of September 28 morning, the city recorded 111.63% of its target. The eastern suburbs measured 2613 mm, the western suburbs 2612 mm, and the island city 2164 mm. Residents are advised to avoid coastal areas and flooded zones as emergency teams remain on high alert.

Emergency Measures in Place

Officials have assured that personnel and emergency teams are on heightened alert to assist residents during emergencies. Mumbaikars can contact emergency services at 100 / 112 / 103 for immediate help if needed. The city's vital local train system is expected to experience delays due to increasing rainfall.

Though accustomed to monsoon interruptions, Sunday's rain once more underscored the city's strength. Authorities stay vigilant, but residents are advised to remain indoors, travel carefully, and utilize helplines during emergencies.
