Mumbai-Goa Highway Update: Kashedi Tunnel Opening This Month; Travel Time Cut From 45 To 15 Minutes

Holiday travellers heading to Konkan can expect a smoother and quicker journey this summer. The much-anticipated Kashedi Ghat tunnel on the Mumbai-Goa highway is set to be fully operational by May 15, according to a Pune Pulse report. This major road upgrade is expected to reduce travel time, improve safety, and ease congestion on the busy route.

Mumbai-Goa Highway: Final Work In Progress

The 2-kilometre-long tunnel, which connects Poladpur in Raigad to Kashedi in Khed, Ratnagiri, is nearing completion. According to National Highways Authority engineer Pankaj Gosavi, power supply has already been connected at the Poladpur end. The remaining electrical work will be completed within two weeks. Minor leakage issues are also being repaired at the moment.

The new tunnel and the 9-kilometre approach road will save travellers a significant amount of time. The old route through Kashedi Ghat took about 40 to 45 minutes due to its steep curves. Once the tunnel opens, the same stretch will take only 10 to 15 minutes, greatly improving the experience for commuters and holiday-goers.

Mumbai-Goa Highway: Safety Gets A Boost With 200 Streetlights

To ensure driver safety, around 200 streetlights will be installed in and around the tunnel. The lighting equipment is already at the site, and installation is expected to finish within three weeks. These lights will help improve visibility, especially during nighttime travel.

The tunnel will have a 24/7 power supply for lighting and ventilation. Engineers are using grouting technology to fix leaks and prevent water seepage, especially important ahead of the monsoon season.
