Mumbai | Ghatkopar Railway Station Transformed: Phase One Complete, Phase Two UnderwayRailway Station, Mumbai

The Ghatkopar railway station, a hub on the Central Railway's main line, is undergoing a significant transformation, according to Lokmat. The Mumbai Railway Development Corporation, in collaboration with Central Railway, is spearheading this extensive makeover. The renovation includes the installation of escalators, construction of footbridges, enhancement of ticket counters, and replacement of roofs. These improvements have already been partially completed, offering considerable relief to the station's passengers.

Ghatkopar railway station is also an important interchange for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line. The station accommodates approximately four and a half lakh daily commuters. The heavy footfall includes passengers from both the Central Railway and the Metro, leading to a congested environment. The station serves large residential areas such as Asalfa, Kamani, and Narayan Nagar in Ghatkopar West, as well as the population along the Eastern Expressway in Ghatkopar.

The increased number of corporate offices in Ghatkopar and nearby areas has further amplified the passenger load on the station. The ongoing makeover aims to alleviate this pressure and improve the overall commuting experience.

Phased Development

The makeover is being executed in two phases. The first phase has already been completed, and work on the second phase is in progress. The entire project is estimated to cost Rs. 18 crores and is scheduled for completion by April 2027.

Key Enhancements Include:

1. Installation of an escalator on platform number four.
2. New sheet work on platform number one.
3. Beautification of the Metro's foot overbridge (FOB).
4. Construction of a new ticket house and reservation centre.
5. Improved connectivity through additional stairs and escalators to the large FOBs being constructed.

Ketan Shah, a member of the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee (ZRUCC), stated to Lokmat, "The new works include an escalator on platform number four. Beautification work on Metro's FOB is in progress. A new ticket house is ready, and a new reservation centre is coming up. Connectivity is provided through both stairs and escalators."

Passenger Safety And Efficiency

Sandeep Patade, a regular passenger from Ghatkopar, emphasized to Lokmat the importance of strategic placement of escalators. "Escalators should be built where they are needed instead of in places where they are obstructed. A lot of work is still incomplete. Safety of railway staff and passengers should also be maintained while doing these works. If the development works benefit the passengers, it is welcome. However, in addition to this, emphasis should be placed on increasing the number of railway trips. This will reduce congestion at the railway station and decrease the likelihood of accidents."

The makeover of Ghatkopar railway station is poised to significantly enhance the commuting experience by addressing both infrastructural and operational challenges.
