Mumbai Coastal Road Now Under 24x7 Surveillance With 236 AI-Enabled CCTVs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finalized the installation of an advanced CCTV surveillance system along the Mumbai Coastal Road, aiming to bolster safety, streamline traffic regulation, and enable swift emergency response. The entire 10.58-kilometre stretch-extending from Shamaldas Gandhi Marg (Princess Street flyover) to the Worli end of the Worli-Bandra Sea Link-is now under continuous 24x7 monitoring through 236 high-tech cameras.

The surveillance network includes four different types of CCTV cameras, strategically deployed to monitor the road and twin tunnels comprehensively:

Video Incident Detection System (VIDS): 154 cameras have been installed at 50-meter intervals inside the twin tunnels. These cameras detect critical events such as accidents, wrong-way driving, and other unusual activities. Real-time alerts are immediately sent to a central control room for prompt response.

Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) Cameras: 71 PTZ cameras provide dynamic, wide-angle surveillance across the road. They automatically zoom in and focus on any incidents identified by the VIDS cameras, enhancing visibility and control during emergencies or violations.

Automatic Traffic Counting Cameras (ATCC): Positioned at the entry and exit points of the tunnels, these cameras are designed to count vehicles and classify them by type, helping maintain detailed traffic data.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras: Seven cameras dedicated to identifying vehicles violating speed limits by capturing license plates, thereby aiding in enforcement and penalization.

The BMC emphasized that the system will help tackle growing complaints related to speeding, illegal racing, and noise pollution along the scenic road. The live footage and analytics generated by these cameras are shared in real-time with both the BMC's central command and the Mumbai Traffic Police, significantly improving traffic oversight and public safety on one of Mumbai's busiest new corridors.
